BILE ESCULIN AGAR

Description

Bile Esculin Agar is selective medium for the identification of group D Streptococci. The presence of 4% of bile salts inhibits certain Gram negative bacteria allowing the development of group D Streptococci.

The group D Streptococci differentiate themselves from other Streptococci by their capacity to hydrolise the esculin in glucose and aglicone esculatin. The esculatin reacts with an ferrous salt forming a dark brown or black complex that produces a diffuse blackening in the slanted medium that contains ferrum citrate as a source of Fe³+ ions, or a black brown halo around the little and translucid colonies in the medium on the petri dishes.
