BRILLIANT GREEN AGAR

Description

Brilliant Green Agar is a highly selective medium for the isolation of Salmonella, other than S.typhy, from feces, urine and sewage sludge. The normed methods (ISO/ISTISAN/APAT) for foods, dairy products and eggs indicate B.G.A. as a second medium to complement the specific medium used by the method. The brilliant green inhibits enterobacteria and shigella. If you make the sowing of the material we recommend a large inoculum, or carry out the sowing after sample enrichment in Selenite Broth (cod. 18.0080) or Tetrationate broth (cod. 18.0306).

The use of Brilliant Green Agar for the isolation of Salmonella was described for the first time by Kristensen et al. Subsequently, Kauffmann modified the medium to facilitate the isolation even from samples with high contaminants loads as clinical samples (feces and urine), sewage sludge, waste water or foods (milk and dairy products). The medium is also indicated by US Pharmacopoeia (United States Pharmacopoeia, USP) for the microbiological procedures which confirmed the absence of specific microorganisms in food and nutritional supplements; it is also used in the examination of dairy products and in clinical microbiology manuals.
